Popular band ‘Crossroads’ will come alive at ‘Real Concert’, an open air mega concert organized by ‘Real Concert’ Events on 4 May at the Open air theatre of Vihara Maha Devi Park.
The concert will mainly feature ‘Crossroads’ along with few other artistes in a real live concert atmosphere. Apart from that ‘Crossroads’ is currently features at Floor be ‘O’ on Wednesdays, The KEG at Excel World on Fridays and vibrant R & B on Saturdays.
‘Crossroads’ was formed by ex Wild Fire singer/guitarist Fabion Bonnie Paul in 2009, reached the top in the Sri Lankan music scene in just four years.
Along with Fabion ‘Crossroad’ comprises Ranga Perera on bass guitar, gives the touch of deep throated rendition to the band with his popular song ‘Road to Hell’ by Chris Rea. Then the mood changes completely as drummer Chamee Mendis, who performs an excellent production of Disco Inferno. With Neenka Muthukuda, singing ‘With Arms wide Open’ by Creed gives a different touch to the audience. The ‘Crossroads’ guitarist Zion DE Silva is the only guitarist to play a 7 String Guitar in Sri Lanka with a unique sound and mega solo performances. Talented Sampath Kuruwita accompanies everyone on keyboards and provides brilliant backing vocals and harmonies.
‘He adds colour to the outfit with others, who are all talented in singing various styles and formations of songs. This is what is unique about Crossroads. I, actively encourages all the members to sing lead vocals. This is their killer combination and unique selling point in my view. At the same time they all understand that we have to work as a team – that’s the secret to ‘Crossroads’’ Fabion Bonnie explained the inner combination of the band.
Their repertoire ranges from 70’s , 80’s 90’s to current hits, pops, Sinhala pop, jazz and rock in the heavy idiom ‘unravels Fabian’ in husky voice.
‘With husky voice always had success with Rod Stewart tributes and the rock classics of the 80’s and 90’s and as a result of this and the demand of the fans in Sri Lanka at the time Crossroads started out mainly focusing on rock with an element of old dance hits’ he added.
‘Tracks covered by the band are classic dance music from the 70’s through to the current releases, reggae, soul, classic soft rock from the 80’s and 90’s and of course baila. With our repertoire we are versatile and can adapt to perform for any kind of audience/ functions. My main concern is ensuring the music being played is pleasing the crowd’ he said.
‘Crossroads’- a name that not only conjures up musical connotations like Eric Clapton’s album, or The Crossroads Guitar Festival, but deeper symbolism too. The imagery of a Crossroads (an intersection of four roads coming together) is a powerful symbol in many cultures that has endured the test of time
All these connotations make perfect sense when you see the six man group in action. Their repertoire of music is the epitome of ‘choice’ catering for all manner of tastes. ‘Crossroads’ is also a magical combination of different talents and energies on stage.
