Right arm pacie Chemila Obeysekera’s impressive figures of 5 for 26 for helped St. Peter’s to clinch the Schools Under 19 Limited Overs title in the final played at Braybrooke Place on Friday.
Obeysekera was supported by right arm left arm pace-spin combination of Janith Liyanage and spinner Sahan Nanayakkara who shared four wickets and helped St Peter’s defeat St. Benedict’s by five wickets.
Chemila’s five wicket haul included a hat-trick which saw the Bens winning the toss and electing to take first lease of the wicket fall into deep trouble.
The writing on the wall was on for St. Benedict’s as they lost the top five wickets with just 17 runs on the board in the fifth over.
They never recovered from that debacle as they lost the remaining five wickets for the addition of 42 runs being bowled out for a meagre 59 which took the Bens 30.2 overs.
St. Peter’s in their run chase made steady progress and at one stage were cruising well on 40 for 2 in the tenth over but they underwent a setback losing three quick wickets before they reached the target in the 13th over.
St. Benedict’s 59 in 30.2 overs (Shiran Ratnayake 15: Chemila Obeysekera 5 for 26, Sahan Nanayakkara 2 for 6, Janith Liyanage 2 for 11)
St. Peter’s 62 for 5 in 13 overs (Lahiru Milantha 16 n.o.: Yohan Soysa 3 for 28)
