Hamdhan Hussain was chosen the Best Allround Student 2012 at Zahira College, Colombo, for having excelled in Academic, Curricular
and Extra Curricular activities, the “2012 Role Model Student” and was awarded the N.D.H.Gaffoor Gold Medal at its 121st Annual Prize Giving held at the College Gaffoor Hall, recently under the patronage of its distinguished Old Boy, Prof. A. M. Ishaq, the Chancellor, of the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka.
Principal, (Acting), Trizvi Marikkar in his address said that Education is a serious business. In the present day context, there is reluctance on the part of many students to engage in serious educational exercise and in pursuing higher Education as there are a number of other alternatives to make both ends meet.
He said that he firmly believes that it is only through Education that we can bring up a society where peace and harmony would co-exist eternally.
Prof .A, M. Ishaq, Chief Guest, who had excelled not only in Academics but in sports, is Fulbright Scholar had his Masters and Doctorate in Civil Engineering from USA, was an Assistant Professor at the Michigan University and moved as a Professor to King Fahad, University of Petroleum and Minerals in Saudi Arabia for over 30 years. As a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers he was nominated to visit China to hold discussion on Water Pricing.
Prof. A. M. Ishaq said he was well supported by Non Muslims throughout at College and at Colombo University that helped him greatly in pursuing his higher Education. He was grateful to all of them. He emphasized that Education, Sports, Curricular and Extra Curricular activities combined will augur well for the Students future.
Prizes and awards were given by Subjects Grade/Medium wise, High Achiever’s in the Grade 5 scholarship, G.C.E.(O.L) and G.C.E.(A.L) Examinations, Sportsmen who excelled in Education sport wise, Best Student Stream wise and Best Allround Student.
The Guest of Honour was Prof.Sudantha Liyanage, Dean, Faculty of Applied Science, University of Sri Jayewardenepura and Old Boys Association President and Board of Governors Chairman Fowzul Hameed distributed the prizes for winners.
