Sri Lanka’s tax headquarters – the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) building – is moving out of the Fort-Slave island area, making way for tourism-related development amidst an outcry from employees, unions say. The building was only recently renovated following damages caused in LTTE suicide air attack at the building in 2009. Union officials were unaware where the office will be located in future.

A trade union official told the Business Times that employees are opposing to the move as the government has spent a massive sum of over Rs. 1 billion of taxpayers money for the renovation of the whole building.

On the other hand the main tax office should be located in a central place with easy transport access for employees and tax payers, he added,The Marxist JVP will raise this issue in parliament soon to block the move to lease out this prime property in Colombo Fort.
