View(s):The spreading Temple tree, the luscious bamboo grove, the Magosa trees and several other huge trees give a cool and pleasant look to Girls High School, Mount Lavinia which is a leading Girls’ school in the Piliyandala Zone.
We all believe that education is the best general investment one could make for the future. The role of education in the development of a country is incomparable. Girls High School, Mt. Lavinia was started in 1924 with fifty students and two teachers as an English medium girl’s school. By 2012, after 88 years, the school has grown to be a prominent girls’ school in the country with nearly 3000 students and a staff of over 100 with classes from primary school up to A/L in Bio-Science, Commerce and Art sections with many extracurricular activities.
A new office has sprung up just next to where the old one stood. Many new class rooms have emerged. A new hall is being constructed. The school premises have been enclosed, ensuring privacy and safety.
The society around the Girls High school believes that the children are born with a wealth of talent and their potential for development is unlimited if these talents are identified, nurtured and guided along proper channels. Taking the goals of education in to consideration, the school, being a state run school, provides commendable opportunities to develop multi faceted skills and talents for students. The present principal Mrs. H. A. Gayani Princely (SLAS Principal, Bsc (Uni. Of Kelaniya), MED (Uni. Of Colombo) who is a Post Graduate Diploma in Education and Education Management (NIE) holder and the present staff would have ungrudgingly given their best to bring this school to its present standard.
The school produces university qualified students with good results in the Piliyandala zone every year. Every year school produces children who have shown their colours in G.C.E. O/L and Grade 5 scholarship exams in this area.
By this time, the school was popular in Mount Lavinia and started to attract students from the outskirts. The school has met this
success mainly due to the keen enthusiasm, untiring efforts and generous contributions of the past and present dedicated principals’ and a united staff, ably assisted by the parents, well wishers and many others who also have contributed in numerous ways for the success of the organization.
Last year the school produced the best A/L results in its history in the Bio- Science and Commerce streams. It was Pradeesha Jayasinghe (Bio-Science), Janani Ranjana (Arts), and in Commerce – Kaurika Fernando, Dunali Silva, Dinusha Silva, Madusha Rasangi, Araliya Lakshani, Maduri Darshani, Sachichthrani Madubhashi, Sanduni Nisansala, Sandra Livera, Piumi Perera, Hemali Yashodha, Dilini Tharuka, Ishara Gunasena and Upeksha Perera who obtained good results in the Piliyandala zone. The nation-wide success in the education system led the students to consider the
principal and teachers as their kith and kiln. The school conducts seminars and holds remedial classes before and after school hours to improve these results every year. So, whatever the academic achievements made is, primarily due to the hard work of the students and the school staff.
After assuming duties at the end of 2009, the current principal Mrs. H. A. Gayani Princely has achieved a development period quite unparalleled in the history of the school. With the experience and the higher educational qualifications of 13 years as a science graduate teacher in Devi Balika Vidyalaya, she could predict the future and spent a lot of time and effort in the development of the school. She is also capable of working with the staff co-operatively.
Recently a basic need of transportation of the school was fulfilled by buying a school-bus to the. Also within a very short period, the principal arranged to construct a three-storied indoor sports complex with an open-stadium.
The school is popular in sports such as Table Tennis, Karate, Swimming and Cricket. The students have been able to win international
awards for the above sports for the past few years. The school is popular for activities of the Girl Guide’s Association, Little Friends and Olympiad ….etc. The Cadet platoon and the school dancing troops could also win awards in local and
international contests.
Girls High School is indeed fortunate to have a dedicated and enthusiastic Principal whose untiring efforts have produced commendable results. Unlike the good old days certain things have changed remarkably today. The number of students, classes, teachers, buildings, extra-curricular events, the educational cost, political interference, administrative rules and regulations and norms of admissions have not only changed but their plethora and intensity too have increased. In their wake changes has taken place to the students, parents, teachers and attitudes of the society. Nevertheless the school had adapted to the changes very well and is marching forward confidently.
