Grduates from OpenArc campus reveal the secret of their success in BIT
View(s):Upeka and Thiwanka were conferred First Class Honours in Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) degrees at the recently held convocation of the University Of Colombo, School of Computing. It is interesting to note that these brilliant graduates had got only average results in their A/L s. In fact Thiwanka says that he enrolled for the Bachelor of IT (BIT) Program with only 3 ‘s’ passes in his A/L s. The common link that both these graduates share is that they followed an exclusive work-related IT study Programme -The Industrial Diploma in Software Development (IDSD) offered by the OpenArc Campus before commencing their Bachelor in Information Technology (BIT). These two “First Class” Graduates and other graduates who passed with class honours, attribute their success to IDSD which firmly grounded them in Academic studies through its “Classroom” learning experience reinforced by the real-world experience through their work placement at OpenArc Systems Management, the software company found operating from the same OpenArc building premises.
What we provide at OpenArc Campus through our Industrial Diploma (IDSD) is a whole new learning experience which not only provides high pass rates in BIT but also makes the graduate, ‘Job Ready’ with their ‘work experience’ throughout the period of their study says the CEO of OpenArc Campus, Mr. Daya Hettiarachchi. He also commented that the lead-time from the point of graduation to a fulltime employment is almost zero, owing to this Recognition of Prior Experience (RPE) by the prospective employers.
The Industrial Diploma in Software Development (IDSD) is one of a kind in Sri Lanka as the participants receive hands-on training in all areas of Software Development whilst engaged in their Academic studies. At the end of one year’s academic training and the concurrent Industrial experience the students move on to ‘main stream’ BIT programme, where they continue to receive their ‘Twinning Learning’ of academic training and Industrial experience. Therefore it is not surprising that these graduates who come through the Industrial diploma (IDSD) excel in their BIT examinations.
In the wake of the success of the Industrial Diploma, OpenArc Campus has announced that they will continue with their ‘Navodaya’ Scholarship Programme this year too and are planning to offer full and part scholarships to deserving students. A full scholarship is given for the one year Diploma in Industrial Software Development course (IDSD) and three-year BIT Degree Programme of the University of Colombo with guaranteed employment to the top 25 students of the scholarship schemes. These scholarships are offered through a series of ‘Discover IT’ workshops. The Discover IT workshops are scheduled to be held in the months of May and September.
