Site for IESL Northern Provincial Centre at Kilinochchi
View(s):Efforts by the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka to empower its provincial centres to gain functional autonomy received a boost when
the Government Agent for the Northern Province allocated a plot of land near the 55th Mile Post of the A9 Highway for constructing a building of its own for the IESL Northern Provincial Centre. The ceremonial declaration of the newly fenced land as the proposed site for the centre was conducted on 29th March 2013 by the President of the IESL, Eng.Tilak De Silva, whose idea it was to devolve functions of the parent body to the provincial centres. The event was attended by Hon.M. Chandrakumar, MP, Jaffna District, Mrs R. Kethieeswaran – Government Agent for Kilinochchi, Prof. N. Kandasamy – Coordinator for the Engineering Faculty of the University of Jaffna, Mr. S.Nageswaran – Divisional Secretary among more than 50 guests.
The Chairman of the Executive Committee of the IESL NPC, Eng. Suntharakumar, upon whose request the land was allocated, states that the gesture by the government comes at a crucial time when the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Jaffna is being established at Killinochchi and the need for professional services to engineers in the region are strongly felt. He said that the Executive Committee of the IESL NPC has established
a Building Fund, as proposed by Eng. S. Ruthralingam, and the construction of the access road and fencing to the land have been done using the fund, in preparation for the ceremony being held.
The above event comes in the wake of another recent development; the foundation stone laid on 31st January, 2013 for the IESL North Central Provincial Centre at Anuradhapura becoming the first of the eight IESL provincial centres in Sri Lanka to initiate construction of its own building..
In another significant event the IESL Sabaragamuwa Provincial Centre opened,
under its purview, the first ever IESL District Centre with Eng. Jaliya Bandara being elected as the Founder Chairman of the IESL Kegalle District Centre.
Capacity building endeavors are also underway at other provincial centres of the IESL reflecting their enthusiasm and commitment towards attaining functional autonomy for their respective provincial centres and the bringing of the IESL to its members as envisaged by Eng. Tilak De Silva, IESL President. His presidency in this 2012 / 2013 Session has seen the introduction of ICT enabled functionality to key services provided to members at the parent IESL.
A world class membership management system is rapidly coming to being as the mainstay of the IESL Secretariat operations enabling effective communication with its members, better financial control / visibility and make IESL and its members relevance felt in the society.
