It was indeed a fashion show and a fusion of music for all the youth gathered at Park Street Mews on April 4, when ‘Interflash 2013’ took place for the umpteenth time. This is the Interact district 3220’s main financial project of the year that helps the district to conduct various community service projects, and it was organised along with the rotary International, in aid of the Rotary’s ‘End Polio now’ campaign. It was successful in providing a ramp for young aspiring designers within the Interact club to showcase their talents.
Running along the four themes of Nature, Heaven, Rock and Roll and Futuristic, all participants presented two designs within the same theme. They were judged by an eminent panel of judges which included former Miss Sri Lanka for Miss Universe 2005 Rozanne Diaz, designer at Raffles Institute of higher education – Andrea Longhart and Miss Sri Lanka for Miss Universe 2011- Stephanie Sirirwardana.
The curtain opener for the show was the most appropriate song of ‘I want to break free’ performed by Pandora’s Box, a young group of five. The theme of Nature was chosen by Thiyashi Mariya, Sashya Natalya de Alvis and Sulakshini Jayawickrama. Use of animal prints such as tiger and peacock, leaves and even design of fire designs were used.
This was followed by an amazing trio giving the crowd exactly what it needed to set the mood for the next theme of Heaven. Saffra with her remarkable vocals, Oshan with his guitar and Thilanka with his flute managed to get the participation of even the young crowd. Tanisha Perera, Tahiri Perera and Trudy Maryanne showcased a ramp of elegant feminine styles using colours of blue, white, silver and gold keeping up with their theme Heaven.
Amongst the musical performers were ‘MASH’, a group of six AIS students, the duo Shane Vincent and Chalitha Weerakkody both finalists at T N L onstage 2012 who went on to perform acoustics, ‘Magician’s Toolbox’, winners of T N L onstage 2012, ‘Swasthi’, an all Anandian set of drummers who gave an amazing drum fusion as well as ‘Audacity’, which showcased girl power at it’s best.
The highlight of the evening was a beat boxing act performed by Julius Mitchell. Freestyle beat boxing, electric guitar music parts, techno beats as well as his ‘Lankan style’ which was better than the ‘Gangnam style’ managed to echo through the Stables and appeal the audience.
The next theme of Rock and Roll presented by Prasansa Ruddrigo, Yohani Dodangoda and Nabeela Yaseen displayed clothes that were both brightly coloured and shiny and even a dress made of CD’s took the audience back to the time of legend Elvis Presley. This was followed by Futuristic, presented by Siobhana Manuelpillai, Raffaella Sinthi Ruddrigo, as well as the only male designer Ahmed Sulaiman Hussain which showcased dresses made of squares and cubes, dresses and suites as well as an ego dress that reminded the crowd of blood thirsty vampires.
Two guest designers from Raffles, Thilini Perera and Jayani Perera also show cased their designs to give the aspiring young designers an idea on a finished design which can be offered to potential buyers. The overall winner of the show was Siobhana Manuelpillai and Sashya Natalya de Alvis became the runner-up.
