When you first move in to your new home, you will be faced with a blank canvas, to which you can add your own personality and create your own special space.

Firstly choose a colour palette that you think you can live with – there are all sorts of different colour recipes to choose from.
It is far better to paint several large boards with individual colours rather than small colour patches on the wall, that way you can look at each in isolation and it’s much easier to imagine what the room might look like.

It is also important to look at them throughout the day and evening as the light changes to see which shade works best in all lights.
A harmonious scheme uses three colours next to each other on the colour wheel, for example yellows, oranges and reds. One room could be quite dramatic with pops of coloured accessories. The next room could be much calmer, using just one of the colours in more muted tones.

A monochromatic scheme uses just one colour in varying shades and tones. For example you might choose to use whites and greys but it is important to remember that a monochromatic scheme needs to have interest added by way of sculptural shapes and layered textures.

The most important things to consider when designing your room

  • Light is very important! Natural light is calming and maximising the available light from windows is a must. Lighting can also create different moods in a room.
  • Many people decorate hoping to match the newest styles in interior design but ensure that they stay timeless.
  • Orange is a hot colour choice this year and works with apple green and cerise pink – you would’nt necessarily use all these colours on the walls but adding splashes of colour with accessories works really well.
  • If you prefer a more muted look, greys, silvers and blacks are still in fashion and can look very classy.
  • One trick is to keep the walls light and paint the doors and woodwork in either black or dark grey. It instantly adds elegance

Wall art and wallpapers are popular in Sri Lanka but it’s important to get the balance right though. Consider having three off-white walls with a brightly coloured feature wall. Geometrics are big this year and look really great as feature walls.
