Cinema, a glamour industry would not be so shiny without the hard labour of a large number of people who love it and work behind it so tirelessly. This is a truth for the cinema world over. Compared to cinema industries doing well financially, dedicating life to cinema in Sri Lanka which had been undergoing a prolonged crisis is indeed a sacrifice one would do only out of deep love and affection.

Tusita de Alwis whose whole professional life was spent with cinema mostly for Ceylon Theatres Limited is one such rare example of dedication. With five years experience as a Publicity Officer at the New Imperial Talkies from 1978 to 1983, Tusita spent exactly three decades with Ceylon Theatres Ltd from April 1983.

His multipronged task included programming and scheduling of films at company owned theatres in Colombo and the outstations, liaison with film producers, directors and film artistes for the scheduling and the release of films and maintenance of all relevant statistics of the films released in the country and the preparation of publicity budgets for the release of movies.

Starting as a Staff Assistant-Operations, Tusita was the Executive-Publicity and Promotion at the time he completed his service which included essential services to promote the cinema by building bridges between the distributor and the media. During his 30 years with Ceylon Theatres, Tusita also attended to the publicity of Cinema Entertainments (Pvt) Ltd. – CEL circuit for the release of Sinhala films. He was also the Publicity Manager of the films produced by the company `Sthree’, `Kulageya’. `Prathigna’ in 1993 `Love 94’ in 1994 `Sakman Maluwa’ in 2003 -2004, `Diya Yata Gindara’ in 2004 which was produced by Cinema Entertainments (Pvt) Ltd. – CEL

Tusita kept the media updated with all the film line ups in Colombo’s premier theatre complex Majestic Cineplex and other CEL circuit cinemas including Regal Colombo well in advance so that we could inform readers and theatre goers. He was also ever ready to provide information and insights not only on cinema but also the latest happenings in the country’s cinema industry including ‘news’ that would negatively affect it.

He had been a real asset not only to Ceylon Theatres Ltd but to the entire cinema and we wish that he would continue to serve the cinema. (SRF)
