SCAP seminar on small animal medicine
View(s):A two-day seminar on ‘Clinical problem-solving in small animal medicine’ will be held by the Society of Companion Animal Practitioners (SCAP) of Sri Lanka in collaboration with the Continuing Education Committee of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) on April 29 and 30 from 8.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Sri Lankan Foundation Insitute, Colombo 7.
The seminar to be held by the Chairperson of the WSAVA Continuing Education Committee, Dr. Jill E. Maddison and Prof. David B. Church of the Royal Veterinary College, United Kingdom, aims to give practitioners the skills to develop logical approaches to common clinical signs of vomiting, diarrhoea, coughing, weakness and seizures as well as therapeutic strategies for patients with some of these signs.
It will emphasise the importance of history and clinical examination in case assessment and how to get the most from simple clinical pathology tests. The message being that good medicine depends on good clinical thinking skills and not sophisticated equipment.
Suitable for both students and practising veterinarians, the seminar is being organised to mark the 10th anniversary of the SCAP which has as its President Dr. Ganga de Silva. Its Secretary is Dr. Umasha Hemachandra and Director, Continued Learning, is Dr. Nalinika Obeyesekere.
SCAP’s vision is to address the needs of the growing number of companion animal veterinary practitioners and facilitate the push towards improving veterinary medicine in Sri Lanka to international standards.
It hopes to achieve this by conducting regular seminars and workshops addressing the practical needs of Sri Lankan clinicians; providing opportunities for interaction between local and international vets; and introducing up-to-date research, modern techniques and technological advances to Sri Lanka.
The SCAP was founded in 2003 by Dr. R.M.P.H. Dassanayake, Dr. D.S. Kodikara, Dr. Tissa Jayatilake, Dr. Nalinika Obeyesekere, Dr. Janaki Collure, Dr. Janith Gunasekere, Dr. Mayuri Thammitiyagoda, Dr. Sumith Wanniarachchi and Dr. Viran Abeysena.
The seminar on April 29 and 30 is free of charge but SCAP requests those wishing to attend to seek prior registration, as it will be on a first come first served basis. For more information please e-mail: gangadesilva@hotmail.com
