NWF wants action against Wushu regime
View(s):A faction represented by former players, officials and experts connected to the sport has come out with the agenda of bringing to an end to what they claim as a politically stimulated regime of the Sri Lanka Wushu Federation.
The convener of the faction, the National Wushu Forum (NWF), Samantha Ratnayake told the Sunday Times that the group will hold an open discussion to reveal their motives on Tuesday (30) in Colombo.
“We are totally dissatisfied and depressed with what has been taking place at the Wushu Federation for the past 15 years or so. Even the appointment of the present office bearers contradicts with the adopted national Sports Law of Sri Lanka.
We have complained earlier against the dictatorship that is being continuing to the Ministry of Sports but nothing productive occurred,” Ratnayake said.
According to Ratnayake, the Ministry of Sports appointed a committee to investigate to the complaint made by the NWF but the findings have been irresolute.
With intentions of clearing the air, the NWF had made another complaint to the Ministry of Sports, a week before the annual general meeting of the Wushu Federation in March.
“Ministry officials gathered information from us and we hope that a helpful solution will come out at least this time.
What we say is that the appointment of the present president of Wushu Federation, Mr. Manel Dharmakeerthi does not adhere to the Sports Law. He has been in power as the secretary and the president at various points during the past 15 years and has been the root cause of creating a chaos situation in the fraternity.
He clearly has a political agenda and present standards of Wushu prove it. Nothing productive has happened during this time apart from leaving disheartened players, officials and experts and a declining sport. So we decided to form a group and fight against this injustice,” Ratnayake, the former president of the schools Wushu body added.
Mr. Dharmakeerthi was not available for comment – NA
