The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) which was founded in 1863 will celebrate it’s 150th anniversary on the May 8. It is also The World Red Cross Day and happens to be the birthday of Jean Henri Dunant the founder of the movement.

The international theme for this years celebrations is ‘150 years and running’ and that is exactly what has been planned.
Members and well wishers in 188 member nations of the ICRC will take to the streets at one time may it be day or night in that particular nation.

The celebrations in Sri Lanka are to be held in Matara and will commence at 1600 Hrs (4.00PM) with a half marathon, a 10 Km race for women, a 10 Km race for boys under 20 years and a fun run. The Half Marathon (21.975 Km) is an open event for Men and will commence at 4.00 PM from Midigama and end at the Sanath Jayasuriya grounds in Matara

The 10 Km races are open events for Women and for boys under 20 .These two races will commence at Mirissa and end at the Sanath Jayasuriya Grounds in Matara. The fun run open to 100 persons is to start at Nupe Junction and end at the Sanath Jayasuriya grounds.
