As Polytex Garments has one of their manufacturing plants in Yakkala, they wanted to do a community project towards encouraging the reading habit among children in the area. Under the guidance of the Educational Zonal office of Gampaha and library division of Education Department, Polytex Garments CSR team made visits to several schools in the area to understand the available library facilities in those schools. The team observed that Amunugoda Kumaradasa Kanishta Vidyalyaya only has a temporary library with limited space but also saw the keen interest in reading among the students and the efforts taken by the teachers.
Two students who got selected from the school for the good initiative of education department to encourage reading among children called as “producing writers for 21st century” through which children’s writings were published. Witnessing the need and also motivated by the interest of children and the school teaching staff, Polytex Garments decided to gift a library to the school for the children to read with more comfort and space. Polytex built up a cute library building in a reader friendly environment and it is almost reaching completion now. The handing over function is planned to be held on the 6th of May 2013.
Whilst the construction of the building was going on, Polytex organized a special lecture through an eminent university lecturer for the parents of the students to explain the value of reading and how the parents can influence children to read and motivate them.
On the same day, staff volunteers of Polytex conducted an activity based workshop for students of the school to make them interested in learning through different kinds of games and activities. Polytex also plans to organize a reading camp in the future for the children who show highest level of interest in using the library.
