Drugged and raped: 15 year-old’s ordeal just one more in increasing abuse cases
View(s):A sixteen year-old girl from an international school from the suburbs of Colombo went out with her boyfriend early this week. They spent a few hours on the beach where she was offered a soft drink. Hours later she realised that she had not only been drugged, but also sexually abused by her 15 year-old boyfriend.
Soon after, they had been joined by a third person known to them who suggested that they proceed to a night club in Kollupitiya. Later that night they had befriended an Afghan tourist, who had come here a couple of weeks back.
The girl had allegedly been raped by the 54 year-old Afghan after her boy friend had reportedly sold her for Rs. 2,000 to the foreigner.

The Afghan tourist and the boyfriend were arrested by the Mount Lavinia Police on Wednesday and produced before the Mount Lavinia Additional Magistrate Ruchira Wellawatta who remanded them till May 14. The Afghan is presently at the prison hospital being treated for high blood pressure and diabetes.
This incident was just one among a series of cases of rape and sexual abuse which have been on the rise in Sri Lanka. This week a former doctor of the Sri Jayewardenepura hospital was granted bail after he was accused of molesting a pregnant woman. The gynaecologist had visited the ward at night and allegedly molested her. Doctors and other staffers had come to her rescue after she had raised cries for help.
The incident occurred four years ago, but the case came up this week following the completion of a police investigation. Dr. Tishan Jayashantha Paranamanna the alleged molestor was released on two surety bail of Rs. 500, 000 each. The court order was given by the Colombo High Court Judge, Devika Tennakoon on Monday. Trial has been fixed by the High Court Judge for August 26.
The statistics obtained by the police showed that the figures of rape cases have shown an increase in the past three years. Last year 1,920 cases were reported while in 2011 and 2010 the number of cases reported were 1, 871 and 1, 854 respectively. According to an officer from Police Women’s and Children’s Bureau the figures would be higher if all cases of rape were reported. But many of these cases do not come to light.
