Sehwag dumped from Champions Trophy squad
View(s):NEW DELHI, May 4, 2013 (AFP) – India on Saturday named a 15-man squad for next month’s Champions Trophy one-day tournament in England.
The Indian selectors left out experienced and prolific opener Virendra Sehwag and off spinner Harbhajan Singh from their touring squad.
Sehwag who has not been performing to his true potential was replaced by Shikar Dhawan who scored a whirlwind century against Australia in a Test match while off spinner Ravichandran Ashwin seems to have permanently taken over the slot of the of spin operator.
The other two notable absentees from the touring squad are Sehwag’s long time partner Gautham Gambhir who has made way for Murali Vijay and allrounder Yuvraj Singh.
The squad now has five specialist batsmen in Dhawan, Vijay, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma. Karthik will be the back-up keeper behind MS Dhoni – though he is capable of fitting into the eleven only as a specialist batsmen. The spin department has a mix in off-spinner R Ashwin, left-armer Ravindra Jadeja and legspinner Amit Mishra. The Indian seam department will comprise Irfan Pathan, Umesh Yadav, Vinay Kumar, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ishant Sharma
