Yarl Star Sports Club (B) lifted the crown in the recently held Hockey 5s tourney, organized by Gnanapaskarodhaya (GPS) Sports Club, under the patronage of Jaffna District Hockey Association and played at the GPS grounds on their 93rd anniversary.
The President of the Jaffna District Hockey Association (JDHA), M. Elampiraiyan said that it was a massive success for the JDHA as they were the first to conduct this type of a tournament using the new Hockey 5s format in Sri Lanka, which had a trial run at the Hong Kong Easter Hockey 6s tournament. Even though 12 teams registered for the tournament, only nine took part. The rules and regulations of the new format were demonstrated by M. Elampiraiyan and Daniel Mathiyalagan, instructors at the Sports and Physical Education Unit of the University of Jaffna.
Even though there was confusion during the initial stages, later on the players developed a sense of courage and played better. In the finals, Yarl Star (B) team overcame Old Golds Sports Club by 1-0. Jaffna University’s Sports Instructor and Hockey coach, Daniel Mathiyalagan, is the manager and coach of the Yarl Star (B) team who are the proud winners of the first ever 5s Hockey Tourney held in Sri Lanka.
