A Brazilian may be the next head of the Geneva-based World Trade Organisation (WTO), replacing Director General and French national, Pascal Lamy.

At an informal meeting of the ambassadors of member countries on May 8, a 3-member committee, looking into the selection, recommended Brazil Ambassador Roberto Carvalho de Azevêdo as the candidate who can gain consensus approval of WTO members. The committee suggested that members approve his candidature at the WTO General Council meeting on May 14. Candidates from Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia, New Zealand, South Korea, Ghana, Costa Rica, Kenya and Jordan were submitted by their Governments for the position, according to WTO sources.
