New standards system for vehicle repair centres
View(s):A programme aimed at raising the standards among motor vehicle repair centres across the island was launched by the Motor Traffic Commissioner’s Department (MTC).
Under the initiative the MTC will give its seal of approval and standardization certificate to motor vehicle repair centres that meet tough new requirements developed by the authorities.
“This will add significant value to the quality of service lifting the standard of vehicle repair centres and garages,” said Motor Traffic Commissioner General S.H. Harishchandra.
Workers at these centres will be given systematic training on motor mechanism under this initiative, he added.
The MTC is now in the process of preparing lists of vehicle repair centres and garages obtaining necessary information from Divisional Secretaries, he revealed.
Meanwhile vehicle emission testing is being carried out countrywide with properly trained smoke inspectors.
The department has focused attention on training of smoke inspectors to streamline the procedure, Mr. Harishchandra said.
New equipment brought down by the department is used to carry out more stringent tests including night checks on vehicle emissions, he disclosed.
He noted that random checks would be carried out on vehicles using the equipment, the first of its kind to be used in the country.
“Instruments to test diesel and petrol vehicles have been distributed to each district in the country, to monitor heavy emissions of smoke,” he said.
The new laws will also deal with vehicle emission testing centres that issue bogus certificates to vehicle owners, despite vehicles not meeting the stipulated standards.
