Sri Lanka vehicle registrations plunge further
View(s):Sri Lanka’s vehicle registrations plummeted 35.9 per cent to 87,209 in the 1st four months of 2013 from 136,132 a year earlier with high import duties curbing new arrivals, Motor Traffic Department officials said.
According to data from Sri Lanka’s Motor Traffic Department, motor car registrations fell to 8,579 in January-April 2013, down 38.1 per cent from13,875 a year earlier. Three wheelers fell to 29,641, down 15.9 per cent from 35,269 a year earlier while motor cycles fell to 63,987, down 19.5 per cent from 79,506.
Registration of lorries also plunged to 2321 in the first four months of 2013, down 45.4 per cent from 4254 a year earlier. Maruti/Suzuki and Alto cars were down to a drastic level while super luxury BMW 5 series was up, motor traders said.
BMW vehicles sales are believed to be driven by duty slashed vehicle permits given to senior public sector employees.
