St. Peter’s, St. Sylvester’s, Devi Balika and Maliyadeva Girls’ School Kurunegala won major honours at the All-Island Western and Eastern Band Competition, which was held at the Royal College Senior and Junior Cricket grounds in Colombo last weekend.

St. Peter’s College Colombo won the Western category of the boys’ segment as hosts Royal College Colombo, led by K.G.H.S. Peiris, was placed second. D.S. Senanayake College secured third position as Royal leader Peiris was named the Best Band Leader of this category.
St. Sylvester’s College Kandy dominated the Eastern category in the boys’ segment while its leader W.W.V. Eranga won the Best Band Leader award in that group. D.S. Senanayake College took second position, claiming a double in the competition, while Ananda Sastralaya Kotte was placed third in the category.

Devi Balika Vidyalaya emerged champions of the Western category girls’ segment as its leader Pasanthi Wickramasinghe clinched the Best Band Leader award. St. Paul’s Girls’ School Milagiriya placed second with Holy Cross College Gampaha following in at third. Maliyadeva Girls’ School Kurunegala won the Eastern category in the girls’ segment followed by Kalutara Balika Vidyalaya and St. Paul’s Girls’ School Milagiriya who won their double in the competition. I.M.S.V.J. Samidon of Maliyadeva GS was adjudged the Best Band Leader in this category.

This event, which was organised by the Old Royalists Cadet Band Association, was held in the above four major categories and the winners were awarded the Lt. Col. M.A.C. Perera Memorial Trophy. The trophy was awarded in memory of the late Lt. Col. M.A.C. Perera, an Old Boy of Royal College who sacrificed his life for the motherland.

Over 65 western and eastern bands from all parts of the country participated in the competition, which attracted thousands of spectators. Rs. 100,000 each was awarded to the winner of each category as the second and third placed teams received Rs. 75,000 and Rs. 50,000 respectively under each category. Minister of Education Bandula Gunawardana and the Commander of the Sri Lankan Army Lt. General Jagath Jayasuriya graced the occasion as Chief Guests.
