Ear-biting Deputy Mayor out on bail
View(s):Ratnapura Municipal Council Deputy Mayor Nilantha Roshan who is accused of biting off a part of the ear of a traffic police officer on duty in the heart of the town, is out on bail. He was arrested following the incident while he was receiving treatment at the Ratnapura General Hospital for injuries, he says he sustained during a brawl with the policeman.
The police officer Nimal Peiris had been on traffic duty at the St. Lucas junction in Ratnapura town when the Deputy Mayor had come on a motor cycle without wearing a helmet. He was pulled over by the policeman on duty and an argument ensued which eventually led to the Deputy Mayor allegedly biting of a part of the policeman’s ear. Mr. Roshan has told the police he too was injured in the brawl.
Eye witnesses said it was the Deputy Mayor who had attacked the police officer first. People of the area had witnessed the brawl but did not interfere as the Deputy Mayor was involved.
Following the incident the suspect’s mental status is being assessed.
