Our story on homeless South Eastern undergrads draws favourable response
View(s):Following the Sunday Times article South Eastern varsity undergrads ‘homeless’ published on March 10, the authorities have taken measures to resolve the problems of students at the Eastern University’s Faculty of Heath Care Science. Chancellor Dr. Kidner Govindarajah told the Sunday Times that a hostel is being put up in the vicinity of the Batticaloa Pilliar Temple.
Our previous article highlighted that second and third-year undergrads of the South Eastern University had been told their accommodation within the university premises will be discontinued this year, to make room for the 2013 intake. “There are hostel problems at Vantharumoolai. Since it is an isolated area it is difficult to get large houses for rent. About 1200 students are occupying the hostel which was put up for 750 students,” the Chancellor said.
“We have now rented a place for them to reside. It is better than the Vantharumulai hostel. They are also being provided with food bought at a low rate,” he said. “The rented place will be used for males for a period of 2 to 3 years. By that time the student’s hostel at the Pilliar vicinity will be completed,” he said.
Dr. Govindarajah said this year 80 more students have been enrolled with most of them being from other districts. “Our university has also allocated Rs. 300 million out of the four billion rupees allocated for all the universities this year. From this a semi-permanent building that could accommodate 80 girls is being constructed,”the Chancellor said.
