Blue Stars and New Youngs take the lead
View(s):Two of the dominant football sides Blue Stars and New Youngs came to the forefront after first week’s play as they took pole position of the respective group points tables in the Dialog Champions League 2013.
From a total of nine games tables’ leaders Blue Star, New Youngs and Java Lane walked out with wins as six games ended in draws.
The Group ‘A’ table leaders Blue Star enjoyed a comfortable win by 4 goals to nil against newcomers Super Sun as Java Lane recorded a thrilling win against Air Force by 1 goal to nil. Group ‘B’ leaders New Youngs recorded a 1-nil win against Kalutara Park to remain as the only team to record a win from the cluster.
Crowds gathered in big numbers to witness the proceedings of the opening week at different venues around the country with much fancied clubs facing challenges thrown out by the newcomers, who justified their position in the countries most popular and competitive football championship. This was evident when Pelicans FC from Kurunegala who led 1-0 until the third quarter of the game settled out for a thrilling 1-1 draw against the former champs Renown.
So did Colombo FC who impressed as newcomers to give a torrid time to defending Champion of Champions, Navy SC and end the game in a scoreless tie. Another newcomer Matara City, a club headed by renowned national cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya travelled all the way to Negombo to record a 1-1 draw against Negombo Youth. Army SC who is at present competing in the Asian Football Confederation President’s Cup Championship in Cambodia will begin their campaign this Wednesday (15) against Nandimithra SC.
