Colombo FC, Renown and Navy SC registered contrasting wins while the day’s remaining three games of the Dialog Champions League (DCL) 2013 football championship ended in draws, at six different venues yesterday. As the second week of the DCL continued yesterday, Renown recorded the most thrilling victory of the three as they changed the fortunes of New Youngs by snatching the game 2-1 at Longdon Place. New Youngs led 1-0 heading into the 60th minute until they suddenly lost their rhythm and conceded two goals. Renown striker Mohamed Naufer struck both goals within a space of five minutes to give his team a well-deserved win after being held to a draw by Pelicans last week.

In a battle of newcomers played at Beruwela, Colombo FC drubbed Super Sun by four goals to one. The win though was unimpressive from the point of Colombo FC as their opponents Super Sun played a mediocre game in a league which is competitive. They will have to approach games more professionally to keep their chances alive in the big league. However Colombo FC, who had a good game last week against Navy SC, repeated the same style of play with former national player Mohamed Raumi, their playmaker, feeding the forward line and playing a crucial role in all four scoring chances.

At Welisara, Navy notched up a close win over giant killers Java Lane. Visitors Java Lane looked like they were holding the Sailors at bay until striker S. Charles headed the crucial and solitary goal of the match to record a 1-0 victory.

Matara City put up a gallant performance to record a thrilling nil-all draw against the glamour boys Saunders at Kelaniya. Matara City, who also held former champions Negombo Youth to a thrilling draw last week, poses a threat to top teams in the league.

Don Bosco hosted Nandimithra as their encounter ended in a thrilling 1-1 draw while Upcountry Lions too made an impact with a good draw against Kalutara Park in Kalutara. Three more exciting games will be played today in and around Colombo. The pick of them will be the game between Air Force and Negombo Youth, which will be played at Ekala. The match between Ratnam and Blue Star at Longdon Place too can see a tight finish. Police SC will host newcomers Solid SC in a game which looks to be one-sided.
