IESL ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE AWARDS
The annual Engineering Awards scheme was established by the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) to encourage and celebrate the excellence in the science and the practice of engineering by rewarding the best and the finest of its members, individuals, organizations and enterprises in Sri Lanka for their outstanding accomplishments and achievements related to engineering.
The quest for excellence in professions paved the way to some of the most innovative solutions to challenges faced by mankind.History is replete with men and women of great vision whose pursuit of excellence with patience and perseverance laid the foundation for their countries’ progress.
Sri Lanka in particular has a great engineering tradition. Its ancient kings engaged in great engineering works that considered the best interest of the society.Late engineers D.J. Wimalasurendra, Prof. E.O.E. Periera, B.D. Rampala, Dr. A.N.S. Kulasinghe, Dr. Ray Wijewardene and others carried on the tradition to the present generationand established the parameters of excellence status to the modern western style engineering profession in the country.
The Engineering Excellence Awards program for 2013 has been announced and nominations / applications are being entertained up to 28th June, 2013 for the award categories; Eminence in Engineering Award, Excellence in Engineering Awards, Excellence in Engineering Awards for Organizations, Engineering Entrepreneur Award, Award for Excellence in Engineering Journalism, Young Chartered Engineer Awards, Chartered Engineer Awards, Social Responsibilities and Environment Award, Engineering Heritage Award and Outstanding Engineering Education Award. Briefs on them are as follows:
Eminence in Engineering Award
The Award for Eminence in Engineering will be presented only to one Distinguished Fellow of the Institution who has demonstrated outstanding achievement and eminence in the science and the practice of engineering.
Excellence in Engineering Awards for Individuals
Individual Awards for Excellence in Engineering will be presented to up to eight Fellows of the Institution who have demonstrated professionalism and pursuit of excellence in the science and practice of engineering in their respective disciplines. The disciplines covered will be as follows: 1.Agriculture and Plantation Engineering, 2. Building Services Engineering, 3. Civil Engineering, 4. Chemical Engineering, 5. Electrical and Electronic Engineering, 6. IT and Communication, 7. Mechanical Engineering, 8. Any other fields of engineering not covered in 1-7 above.
Excellence in Engineering Awards for Organizations
Awards for Excellence in Engineering for Organizations will be presented to five engineering organizations engaged in the following sectors which demonstrate professionalism and pursuit of excellence in the science and practice of engineering;Manufacturing (Large), Manufacturing (Medium), Infrastructure – Construction, Infrastructure-Services, Engineering Services. Manufacturing organizations will be classified as ‘Large’ or ‘Medium’ based on their total investment as at the date of the balance sheet of the financial year ending in 2011/2012 Organizations whose total turn over has exceeded Rs 100 million will be considered as large organizations and those whose total turn over is from Rs 30 million to Rs 100million will be considered as medium organizations.
Engineering Entrepreneur Award
This Award is presented to a Corporate Member for his entrepreneurial promise and potential to contribute to the economic wellbeing of the country.
Award for Excellence in Engineering Journalism
This Award will be presented to a journalist, presenter, director, producer or a mediapersonality in any other capacity for the outstanding reporting / production inprint/electronic media to further public understanding and promotion of engineering.
Young Chartered
Engineer Awards
These (up to 7) Awards will be presented to Corporate Members of the Institution who are 35 years of age or younger for their outstanding contributions to the following fields of engineering:1. Agriculture and Plantation Engineering, 2. Building Services Engineering, 3. Civil Engineering, 4. Chemical Engineering, 5. Electrical and Electronic Engineering, 6. IT and Communication, 7.Mechanical Engineering
Chartered Engineer Awards
These (up to Awards will be presented to Corporate Members of the Institution who are more than 35 years of age for their outstanding contributions to the following fields of engineering: 1. Agriculture and Plantation Engineering, 2. Building Services Engineering, 3. Civil Engineering, 4. Chemical Engineering, 5. Electrical and Electronic Engineering, 6. IT and Communication, 7. Mechanical Engineering, 8. Consultancy and/or providing engineering services
Social responsibilities and environment Award
This Award will be presented to a Fellow/Member /Associate Member of the Institution
for his/her contribution to the preservation of environment and social responsibilities.
Engineering Heritage Award
This Award will be presented to a Fellow/Member/Associate Member of the Institution
for his/her outstanding contribution to the cause of engineering heritage by preserving
the legacy of past engineering feats through its identification, maintenance and
promotion.
Outstanding Engineering Education Award
This Award will be presented to a senior academic in the field of engineering who is a Fellow/Member/Associate Member of the institution for his/her contribution to the professional development of his/ her students and significant research and contribution to enhancement of teaching methods and contribution to national development.
