New hostel to ease overcrowding at Eastern University

A permanent hostel for the Eastern University is being constructed at the village of Pillaiyaarady –the site for the proposed new building complex of the Faculty of Health-Care Sciences.  The hostel is meant to ease overcrowding at existing hostels.

The need for a new hostel became necessary as overcrowding at the present premises at Vantharumoolai in Chenkalady led to students being housed outside the university. Vice Chancellor of the Eastern University, Dr Kiddnan Kobindarajah said around 1,200 students were occupying the hostel which was meant to house 750 students.

“Presently we have rented houses in town for students to reside. They have better facilities than those offered at the Vantharumoolai hostel. They have also been provided with food purchased at cheaper rates,” he said.

Dr. Kobindarajah said a sum of Rs. 300 million had been allocated for this purpose. He added 80 more students had been selected to follow studies at the Faculty of Health-Care Sciences this year and most of them were from outside the Batticaloa district. The Chancellor mentioned a semi-permanent building that could accommodate 80 female students was under construction and was expected to be completed within a period of two months.

The houses rented for female students would be used for male students over the next two to three years by which time the hostel at Pillaiyaarady would be completed, he said.
