Four new records established in morning session
The morning session of the third day’s proceedings of the Junior National Athletics Championship held at the Diyagama Stadium saw

four new records being established, one being equaled and two competitors who came second in their events too breaking the existing records.
The new record set in the girls event was in the shot putt under 16 where Resuree Wijesundara hurled a throw of 11.11m to eclipse the record of 10.56m set by Zeenath Imtiaz of Kalutara BV last year. In the same event second placed Silpa Fernando of Lyceum International Wattala also bettered the existing record with a throw of 10.64.
The three new records set in the track events were all in the hurdle events. Kaushalya Madushani of Kuliyapitiya Central established a new record of 1.03.55 seconds in the under 20 400m hurdle to eclipse the existing record of 1.04.52 set by M.N. Kalupahana of Sumana BV Ratnapura in 2006. Second placed Wathsala Kumari too bettered the record with a timing of 1.03.61.
W.P.R. Dulakshi of Air Force set a new record in the same event for girls under 23 with a timing of 1.01.97 seconds to better the existing record which was also set by M.N. Kalupahana of Sumana BV Ratnapura in 2007.
The record in the boy’s event was in the 400m hurdles under 20 where Sohan Madusanka of De Mazenod Kandana finished with a timing of 53.72 seconds eclipsing the record of 54.24 which was in the name of M.H. Saleem Deen of Trinity which he achieved in 2010. J.L. Prasanjith of Taxila Central Horana too bettered the record with a timing of 54.16.
The record that was equaled came in the boys under 20 200m where Suranjaya de Silva of ABK Nugegoda which equaled the record set by U.G. Wickramasinghe of St Anthony’s Colombo in 2007.
