Under 23 tournament once again in the old format
Sri Lanka’s 2013/14 cricket calendar will begin with the Under 23 tournament, which will flag off from June 7 and go on until June 9.
This gateway tournament, which is considered one of the main feeding points to the national grid, will be played on the same basis as last year with twelve teams in the top tier and 21 teams in Division II.
The Sunday Times learns there were certain moves to conduct the Under 23 tournament like the Premier League tournament with the same sides but time constraints have prevented the SLC Executive Committee directing its tournament committee to do so.
Ironically, all this means that the Sinhalese Sports Club, which won the Premier League tournament handsomely this year, will see their second string youngsters once again languishing in Tier ‘B’.
Tamil Union won the tournament last year while Moors SC, who enjoyed a very successful season, ended up runners-up.
The fourteen teams who are taking part in Division One are Tamil Union, Colts, Navy SC, NCC, Army SC, CCC, Ambalangoda Singha, Moors, Ai Force SC, Ragama CC, Moratuwa SC, Bloomfield C and AC, Leo SC, Negombo CC.
These fourteen teams will take part in the tournament in the second weekend of June.
The teams which are drawn up in the two-day Division II tournament are SSC, Kandy CC, Antonians, Kurunegala SC, Wennappuwa SC, Old Moratuites, Old Anandians, BRC, Ports Authority, Galle CC, Vidyalians Kegalle, Kurunegala YCC, Kandy YCC, Police SC, Lankans CC, Saracens SC, Sebastianites, Old Dharmapalians, Kalutara TC, Kelaniya SC and the Chilaw Marians.
However the dates are not finalised for the Division II tournament.
The Sunday Times also understands that SLC still has not made up their minds if they will conduct the Under 23 Division III tournament in the ensuing year.
