Wesley master the science of winning
View(s):Wesley overcame Science College Mt Lavinia by 25 points to 14 in a seventh round match of the Singer Under 20 Division 1A inter-school rugby encounter played at My Lavinia yesterday.
Wesley having taken a 15-7 lead at the short whistle accumulated their points through a goal, three tries and a penalty to the two goals scored by Science.
Wesley was the far better side as they played and though having lost their three previous games they were fancied to pull off the game and Science came into the game sans their vice captain who is facing a two week disciplinary suspension following their match against St Peter’s played last week.
It was Wesley who made the first scoring in the fifth minute through a try by prop forward Gavin Siergertz with skipper and scrum half Rahul de Silva adding the extra points.
Science undeterred put in some stiff resistance and gave the Wesley defense some anxious moments and they succeeded in breaching it with skipper Richard Dharmapala going for a try and Chathura Gomes making no mistake with the conversion to make it seven all.
Wesley surged ahead and a few minutes later succeeded to force a penalty which Rahula de Silva had little difficulty in booting it over. The Wesleyites increased their lead through an unconverted try by centre Tharindu Ariyawansa to give Wesley a 15-7 lead at lemons.
The turn around saw the Wesleyites playing with more cohesion as they rattled their opponents before second row Ishak Jurangpathy went over for a corner flag try and the kick at goal was of a difficult range.
However Science came back into the attack and made some sporadic moves which culminated in flanker Lasindu Karunaratne going over for a try giving Chathura Gomas an easy kick at goal.
The Wesleyites missed many scoring opportunities and as in the previous game they lacked the finishing touches which no doubt would have given them a better winning margin.
It was winger Lahiru Prasad who put the issue beyond doubt for Wesley with the match winning unconverted try which saw Wesley end the game securing their fourth win of the season.
