IESL President Visits Southeastern University Engineering Faculty
View(s):The South Eastern University of Sri Lanka is to work closely with the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) in takingmeasures towards attaining international accreditation for the engineering degree programsit will offer in its new Faculty of Engineering.This was the subject of discussion when a delegation of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka led by its President, Eng.Tilak De Silva, met with Prof. S.M.Mohomed Ismail , Vice Chancellor of the university at the university premises.
IESL, the apex body of the engineering profession in Sri Lanka is committed to promoting and facilitating the adoption of internationally recognized outcome based engineering education systemin the engineering curriculum of the
country’suniversitieswith a view to obtaining international recognition for their degree programmes. Graduates passing out with accredited degree programmes are recognized as academically fully qualified engineers to practice engineering in any signatory country of the Washington Accord and similar international agreements governing mutual recognition of engineering qualifications and professional competence. Currently the Engineering Faculties of the Universities of Moratuwa, Peradeniya, and Ruhuna are engaged in the drive towards attaining accreditation for their degree courses with IESL facilitation. Speaking at the meeting the Vice Chancellor, Dr. Ismail, briefed about the formation of the Faculty of Engineering at the SE University and the resources available for it at present. He further mentioned that they have planned to start, initially, five departments in the Faculty of Engineering at the University, these being; Civil, Electrical& Electronics, Mechanical, Computer Science and Interdisciplinary departments. He informed that about 95 students have already registered.He added that the university have an aim to start a new department related to Petroleum Engineering in the future and that the Chancellor of the University Prof. A. M. Ishaq is keenly working on this matter.
The President of the IESL explaining about the accreditation of thedegree programmesstressed the importance of it in order to get recognition for the engineering degree awarded by faculty and the university as well. The president further informed that if the Vice Chancellor requests for a member of the faculty to be appointed as an observer at the IESL accreditation committee, IESL will take it into consideration. The Vice chancellor thankfully accepted the advice and said that he will make a request to the IESL, to appoint a lecturer from Faculty of Engineering of the university to the accreditation committee. The President IESL, Eng. Thilak De Silva made an endorsement in visitor’s log book upon the request made by the Vice Chancellor. The meeting was arranged by the Executive Committee of the IESL Eastern Provincial Centre as part of the activities of the inaugural event for the new session of the Centre under the Chairmanship of Eng. A.L.M Nizar. It was followed by a Technical Session at which the President ,IESL was the Chief Guest.
