Royal Panadura has produced many distinguished personalities
A school inaugurated in 1978 as Janadipathy Vidyalaya at Nelum Mawatha – Panadura, today has been renamed Royal College, as per
the Education Ministry classification. It is a 1AB category National School which has classes from Grade 1 up to Grade 13 with Advanced Level Science stream.
With over 3800 students, 150 teachers and another 15 supportive staff, Royal College has highly complex administrative requirements. Decentralization is vital for smooth management. The Principal Mr.H.Sarathchandra Silva, with assistance from the Vice-Principal, manages the entire school through delegation of powers to different sectional heads – A Deputy Principal for the Primary section, a Deputy Principal for the Middle-school, an Assistant Principal for Grade 10 and 11, and another Deputy Principal for Grade 12 and 13. Assistant Principals are also appointed to handle other specific areas – namely: Co-curricular activities, finance, infrastructure, academic affairs and the Tamil medium.
In 1978 the school was established as Janadipathy Vidyalaya at Nelum Mawatha-Panadura with 86 students. The first principal was Mr. Ranjith P.Vithana. During recent times, this was the only school which got the opportunity to initiate Arts, Commerce and Science stream A/L classes all together in the same year as in 1988 they managed to produce the highest number of passes in the G.C.E.(O/L) in the Kalutara District.
Today, Royal College has classes from Grade 1 to Grade 13. All grades conduct classes in both Sinhala and Tamil medium. The English medium was introduced to Grade 12 and 13 in 2001 and also to Grade 6 in 2002. Hence at present, Royal College has English medium classes in 3 Grades. Advanced Level grades conduct
classes in Bio-Science, Physical Science, Commerce and Arts, which include languages and aesthetics.
Royal College boasts of a striking infrastructure which spans over 34 acres. In addition to several long standing structural features, several new buildings have been added to Royal College. A complete Information Technology Centre is the latest integral in the college facilities of over 10 scientific labs, auditoriums and the like. Several new buildings have merged into the distinctively
impressive architectural skyline of Royal College.
Since 1988 they were well settled in the academic field and annually produce many successful results. They are proud to say that the pass percentage of the G.C.E.(O/L) increased from 75% to 85% since 2008 to 2012. Annually the English medium section enjoys 100% results. Moreover the G.C.E.(A/L) passing rate increased from 65% up to 75% while 10 of their students emerged 3As in 2012.
Royal College at present has over 24 sports. Excellent supportive facilities have
helped students to excel in almost all these sports. The newly built Sports Complex boasts squash courts, basketball courts and table tennis, in addition to an international standard rugby football ground and a modern gymnasium, 2 cricket grounds and nets, swimming pool with diving facilities, along with volleyball and tennis courts are among the sports facilities within the school
premises. Academic study of sports and physical training is also an integral part of the curriculum. A wide range of sporting events are held throughout the year. The volleyball teams bagged the zonal championships since 2010. Royal College Panadura, has one of the best school cricket teams in Sri Lanka which brought the Best Outstation School Cricket championship with the best bowler, fielder and batsman awards. One of their crickets got the chance to lead the school cricket team for the tour to Malaysia. Annually the U-13 team has been winning the provincial championship since 2010. The Rugger, Badminton, Swimming, Table tennis, Hockey and athletics teams has emerged provincial champions as well. They are proud to say that the famous cricketer Chamara Silva
and the Life-Saving sportsman and athlete Lahiru Fernando are the products of Panadura Royal College.
Royal College has over 50 active clubs and societies. These ranges from those related to academic study (Science Club), to those associated with hobbies (Philatelic Society), to those linked with organizations outside college (Red Cross Society), and to those catering to the Arts (Art Circle). Most enjoy enthusiastic membership, filling the college calendar with their activities, all year round.
Royal College – Panadura within its short span of history has produced many distinguished personalities to the nation such as doctors, engineers, lawyers, accountants and forces which is a great privilege for the present generation.
