Death traps in the city
Exposed high voltage wires which pose a danger to the public are a common sight in and around Colombo
In some cases electricity wires lie exposed and could be accidently touched by members of the public. In other cases these wires can be seen strung across balconies of houses.
In most areas the wires lie exposed and passers-by can inadvertently come into contact with them. “With the onset of the monsoon, these exposed wires pose a greater risk”, said Bandula Wijesiri, a resident of Central Road, Mattakkuliya.
Dangers posed by high voltage electric wires come from a variety of sources, some from electricity sub stations from which the supply is distributed while in other cases from connection boxes which have been left uncovered.
