A well-knitted show with good music
View(s):“Beats and Bars” , a concert presented by ‘The Studio’ was a roaring success with a full house on May 18 at the Bishop’s College Auditorium. From the opening song (Twist again), it was quite evident that the children were having fun which to me is something sadly lacking in many concerts of this nature. The songs performed were all popular ones from different eras, from the oldest, the ‘Tritsch – Tratsch – Polka’ OP 214 written by Johann Strauss in 1858 played very well by the organists and to the modern ‘I am Yours’ by Jason Marz sung by Deshith Gamage who received a spontaneous response from the audience.
Other songs performed by the organists were ‘Mcnamara’s band’, ‘Whistle while your work’, ‘Besame mucho’, ‘Sway’, ‘In the mood’, ‘Bye bye love’, ‘Love changes everything’ and ‘From a distance’ to name a few.
The singers of the intermediate group sang ‘What a wonderful world’, ‘Somewhere over the rainbow’ in good harmony without a conductor to perfection. But there could have been better consistency in their smiling – a facet that needs improvement especially from an intermediate group.
The Juniors’ numbers – ‘Edelweiss’ and ‘Heigh Ho’ were sung with much energy. I thought the use of cymbals could have been avoided as it disturbed the music. All of the singers came together along with the guitarists, drums and the organists to perform ‘Have you ever seen the rain’ which was well co- ordinated.
As expected the difference was in the senior students for all categories. Senuka Jayasekera, Akash Ranasinghe, Hirunu Fonseka and Serita David, excelled in the Organ section, while in the guitars Deshith Gamage was an accomplished performer. Among the soloists Roshana Tissaratchy ‘On my own’, Millindri Panditha’s ‘I will survive’, Danica Lopez’s Sinhala rendition of ‘Piyapathsala’ and Roshanara Tissaratchy’s ‘Don’t cry for me Argentina’ stood out. ‘ I dreamed a dream’ was also performed well by Anisha Fernando and Roshanara Tissaratchy. Young Ramith Herath gave an admirably relaxed rendition of ‘Country Roads’ while playing the guitar, which was taller than the boy himself!
The curtain call saw all performers on stage to acknowledge the applause with directors of the show Shyama Perera and Ishan de Lanerolle who deserve our congratulations for executing a well knitted show with good music.
