Wayamba University hold 12th Agricultural Research Symposium
View(s):Innovation is essential for the development of any country, institute or field. Mostly, these innovations appear as a result of researches conducted by the individual researchers or as a group.
The Faculty of Agriculture and Plantation Management of the Wayamba University of Sri Lanka annually holds the Agricultural Research Symposium (AGRES), upon the completion of the research projects carried out by the third year undergraduates, and the research findings of the individual researchers are published as full papers in the symposium proceedings and consequently presented at the symposium. This year, the AGRES will be held on May 30 and 31 at the university premises with the Chairman of the University Grants Commission, Prof. Mrs. Kshanika Hirimburegama as chief guest.
The Agriculture Research Symposium (AGRES) was initiated in 2001 with the objective of promoting research, providing a forum for undergraduate students to present their findings, discuss and debate, disseminate research findings in collaboration with other relevant institutions and stimulate interactions of students and staff with other relevant institutes. It also provides the students an impetus to demonstrate their oral communication skills.
The research symposium is hosted as a partial fulfilment of the four-year degree programme aimed at developing research, scientific writing and presentation skills of final year students of the Faculty of Agriculture and Plantation Management. This event includes scientific research presentations from a wide range of disciplines in the fields of Agribusiness Management, Biotechnology, Horticulture and Landscape Gardening and Plantation Management. These research projects have been completed within four to six months and some of them have been carried out in collaboration with several governmental, non governmental and private sector institutions.
Now in its 12th year, AGRES has advanced from a mere symposium to a more outstanding scientific programme that enhances interdisciplinary and intercultural relationships. As in the previous years, this year also diverse researches were carried out by the four Departments of the faculty. Studies on the use of fragrant rice, waste water purification from neem extracts are amongst many others in the field of biotechnology. Studies related to the plantation sector include research on tea, rubber, coconut, export agricultural crops, soil, etc. Researches related to socio economic issues i.e. economic development, environmental management, producer and consumer behaviour etc. have been carried out by the Department of Agribusiness Management. In the discipline of Horticulture and Landscape Gardening studies have been on post harvest technology, novel findings on pollution control pest management etc.
The presentations are subjected to evaluation by an individual panel of specialists and the best research presentations in each of the four disciplines receive awards at the closing ceremony.
