Alastair Saverimutto takes over as SLRFU CEO
Alastair Saverimutto, a former professional rugby player in Wales, a key figure at several English football clubs including Premier League side Everton and Chief Operating Officer of the Azerbaijani side Gabala FC, has taken over the Chief Executive Officer’s (CEO) position at the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union.
Saverimutto was also the CEO of ‘195 Water’ and has been involved in the sporting arena in England and Wales both in rugby and football. His career also included playing rugby for Bath, Bristol and Gloucester.
He joins to strengthen the professional brigade that SLRFU Chief Asanga Seneviratne has promised Sri Lanka. In addition to the new CEO the present Executive Director, Rohan Gunaratne, will continue to be in office as Director of Rugby Administration according to sources.
SLRFU will also have Phil Greening in-charge of coaching development while Ravin Du Plessis and Ben Gollings will continue as coaches for 15s and 7s rugby respectively. As CEO, Saverimutto will have his hands full trying to market the game which is getting a bad name despite the progress it has been making.
Meanwhile the SLRFU Council met in an emergency session last Wednesday to discuss the issues relating to the abuse of a referee on May 5, the final day of the Inter-Club Rugby 7s.
