Lanka Sports Reizen (LSR) has invested approximately Rs.700 million in two new properties in Pasikudah and renovated another property in Bentota at a cost of approximately Rs.1 million.

Currently, the biggest interest for LSR is in Pasikudah with its two new properties on six acres of land. The company has already gained necessary approvals for water sports activities, LSR CEO D.K.R.Dharmapala said in an interview with the Business Times on Tuesday. The soft opening of the new two-star hotel in the East named Marina Pasikudah was carried out about three months back.

A specialist in water sports and nature trails, LSR is offering 26 rooms at the Marina Pasikudah before the end of this month to travelers both local and foreign and looking at providing nature and water based activities for holidaymakers, he said.

The location was ideal for a relaxing holiday and an activity-based stay, Mr. Dharmapala explained adding that they were also planning on promoting excursions to lesser known attractions in the East as opposed to simply touring the cultural triangle. Defence Ministry approval has also been granted for LSR to carry out diving to the shipwreck HMS Hermes, he said but pointed out that they were eyeing the use of the lagoon for the water sports activities.

Attracting tourists mainly from France and China would be the main thrust for this new resort and the next property in the same location would be ready by winter 2014, Mr. Dharmapala said.

The second property a four-star hotel comprising 50 deluxe rooms with individual chalets comprising two or three rooms ready for the next season and were yet to come up with naming the resort hotel.

He observed that the Mattala international airport would be of significance to the Eastern properties as it would be convenient for the operators to mobilize the tourist traffic without the hassle of travelling via Colombo.

Meanwhile, the Bentota property was renovated at a cost of Rs.1 million opening up the new Riverside Marina with 12 guest rooms on May 20.

He noted that this property was located bordering the river from the Aluthgama turn off, another new investment for LSR.
