Another success story of IIT- Prabodh Upasena, CEO of IM Solutions
View(s):When choosing a business degree program, I believe it is important to consider accreditation. An accredited programme has been reviewed and deemed “quality education.” Accreditation is also extremely important if you hope to transfer credits, earn an advanced degree, or increase your chances of employment after graduation. Some of the other things to think about include the location of the 
programme, class sizes, professor qualifications, internship opportunities, career placement statistics, program reputation, program ranking, and networking opportunities. The Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT-www.iit.ac.lk) had all of these aspects established within their institute , hence the reason I chose them for my Business Degree in 1997 stated Prabodh Upasena, CEO of IM Solutions Pvt. Speaking of his experience at IIT, Prabodh explained that “We had some great teachers that included both foreign and local lecturers who were engaged, intellectually stimulating and who delivered the content to us in a manner that made our classroom learning experience a very stimulating one. As these sessions were very interactive and included practical oriented activities. At every instance they tried to engage the whole class, and kept the students motivated with varied, lively approaches. They also exhibited expertise and industry know how in the subjects they taught us and presented the study material in an enthusiastic manner and instilled in us a hunger to learn more. In other words they exhibited the perfect blend in academia and industry expertise that is very relevant in the current context. The result was that the guidance, insights and knowledge I gained during my studies at IIT in Market Research, Brand Building, Market strategies and Penetration tactics have all helped me tremendously in running my own business today. They also made us realize the abilities that each of us possessed and how we could realize this potential to the maximum and instilled in us many leadership qualities and soft skills such as teamwork, time management and negotiation skills. These were invaluable to me as I always had the ambition of being an entrepreneur and leading and managing my own organization which I do today.
Elaborating further, Prabodh pointed out that “the industry placement immersed me in a workplace related to my discipline and career goals and offered me an understanding of organizational structures within a professional working environment and an

opportunity for professional development. Having done his industry placement at IFS, Prabodh was involved in an ERP implementation project that entailed him dealing with companies such as Toyota Lanka, Sri Lanka Shipping and got his training in all functional areas of National PVC operation as a management trainee. Prabodh stated that this helped in providing him with essential work experience and commercial awareness and helped him perform better in final year exams and achieve higher grades. He further explained that “It’s definitely a chance to develop the skills you have learned in a practical environment, as well as picking up vital new skills to get you ready for the world of work such as communication, planning, organizing, problem solving, confidence and networking skills.
Today IMS Software celebrates 8 successful years of business as an IT Software Solution provider for both local and international markets. Prabodh has also diversified his organization into the web service through www.megajobs.lk that caters for the Jobs Seekers and Education Course Seekers. Megajobs.lk has signed agreements with many educational institutes including government bodies to promote various training opportunities provided by organization to the students and also with many employment providers to advertise their full time and part time employment vacancies to be filled.
