King Vimaladharmasuriya welcomed Spilbergen very warmly. He introduced his wife Dona Catherina, who dressed in Portuguese style and spoke the Portuguese language very fluently, like him to Spilbergen.

Here the king promised permission to build a fortress in this country, if the Dutch helped him to fight against the Portuguese. The king was only too glad to announce that he would provide all the necessary articles for this fortress.

Spilbergen was overjoyed. He praised the way the king welcomed him warmly. He gave a few ships that they had captured from the Portuguese. He went further and kept a Dutch musician in the palace for the king’s entertainment.

Spilbergen left the palace and came to Batticaloa. From here he took ship to Holland. After the lapse of three months, another delegate from the Dutch East India Company came here to meet the king.

This delegate was Sebalt de Weert. King Vimaladharmasuriya welcomed him too with all pomp and honour. They had discussions and the king was pleased at the end of it. For the expenses incurred by the Dutch, the king promised to give pepper and cinnamon.
