Dr. Jayalath’s funeral tomorrow
View(s):The funeral of former minister and senior member of the main opposition United National Party (UNP), Dr Jayalath Jayawardene, will take place at the family burial grounds in Weligampitiya tomorrow. Dr Jayawardene, 59, passed away at a private hospital in Singapore on Thursday.
Dr Jayawardene was also the Deputy General Secretary of the UNP and Chairman of the party’s trade union the Jathika Sevaka Sangama (JSS) at the time of his death. Born on August 16, 1953, Dr Jayawardena, a medical doctor by profession, was first elected to Parliament from the UNP in 1994, and was the Minister of Resettlement from 2002 to 2004, in the Ranil Wickremesinghe administration, and had been serving as a Parliamentarian since then
Dr Jayawardana attended De Mazenod College, Kandana, and obtained his MBBS Degree from the Medical Faculty of the University of Colombo. He also has several Postgraduate Degrees from the USA, Russia and many other countries.
He was an active politician of the UNP, and was also involved in several medical television programmes, establishing a Guinness record in 2011. UNP Western Provincial Councillor and former Mayor of Gampaha Ajith Manapperuma is to be appointed as the MP to fill Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena’s vacancy.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Friday paid his last respects to late Dr Jayawardena at his residence in Weligampitiya, Ja-Ela, and expressed his condolences to his family. The late Dr. Jayawardene is survived by his wife and two children.
