Victims of the trap gun
Nawagaththegama, a village in the Puttlam district, has many people with leg injuries, some limbless and some paralysed -all victims of trap guns meant for wild animals. One such victim, T.G. Jayaratne, a father of four lost his right leg in a trap gun accident. “We are hardworking farmers and losing a limb affects our lives. Many a time I wished I was dead rather than being limited to a wheel chair,” he said.
Another young victim is 24 year-old Nuwan Sameera, bed ridden after his spine was damaged in a trap gun related incident. Today he is paralysed from waist down. Forty-year-old Sunethra’s husband left her and their daughter after her leg was severely injured in yet another trap gun.
“My husband left us when doctors told him that my leg had to be amputated. I could not do any work nor help in field work for some time. Today I am dependant on my parents,” she said. Sunethra said previously the state provided her a monthly allowance of Rs.3000 for trap-gun victims, but had not received payment since January this year.
According to Nawagaththegama police around 1000 trap guns have been laid in the neighbouring forest area.
