Mobile phone lights to the rescue
View(s):The holding of trials to select a team is a big event, bigger than the actual event itself. These trials were for running and jumping events for youth. The 3000 steeple chase was to be on day two. The lads were ready and about to take off. It was then that officials noticed that the water jump pit was without water. The event had to be postponed to the next day. On day three, this particular event was to be held in the morning but it took place at around 6 pm. Halfway through the event it was dark and the organizers had to go in search of flashlights. Somehow or the other officials took the numbers and the placing with the help of torch lights and even mobile phone lights!
Back to the future
Now the Citadel is like mixed noodles. There are many guys from different factions and sometimes two divisions from the same faction.
Recently the big brother who replaced the other wanted to give the big job to his confidante. But, this job was handled by the secretary for sometime now. The secy was not going to give it up without a fight. The result, the brother and the secy were hauled up before the minister. The minister used his PR. Knowing that the big brother cannot handle the big job properly, the minister asked him to look after this important sector without entrusting it to third parties. As a result the secy is back going on regardless doing his thing.
The puppetee
As there are many guys running around the Citadel with many coloured flags, the Mafia boss who was deemed ineligible is working behind the curtains.
He is using his ‘not so bright’ relative who is in the Citadel to carry his questions to the forum. But, it says sometime the questions that are blurted are out of context and the forum knows from which direction they arrive.
However the Mafia Boss’s efforts have not gone unheeded. Now once again the ground by the stone which he was responsible is to go international again.
Big Shot disappointed
Selections were underway to select a team for an Asian Junior tournament to be held in Brunei in July. The Selection Panel had done their job and had handed the list of selected players to the authorities concerned for approval. But one Big Shot had insisted that a certain girl be included to the list. The Selection Committee, however, stood by their decisions and simply refused to budge from the original team selected to make the tour. And so the Big Shot was disappointed!
Double Game
There seems to be a double game at a leading sport these days. Members of this association are in the process of attending meetings and when the meetings are over, they gather at the residence of a former official to disclose and discuss what took place at these gatherings. With such happenings can one expect furtherance to the game? This is the big question faced by fans and followers of this very popular worldwide game, where Sri Lanka has not made much of a headway
The Big Queue
After a sports event, there was a big queue by some officials to collect their dues for the services they had rendered to the event, which was held from 2 to 5 in the afternoon. However it came as a relief to know that some officials had decided to waive off this amount and not to claim it at – all for the sake of the sport.
What’s the hurry?
There was a mighty big hurry to get a major sporting event to Sri Lanka but quick on the heels of this event a junior meet took place where over 2000 athletes took part. Because they had spent a great deal on the ‘Big’ event, there were not enough funds to conduct the junior event with the same facilities and efficiency. As a result the event was held at two venues and the athletes had to suffer a lot by way of being shuttled from one venue to another. It looks as if very little effort is taken for local events but mention a foreign meet and officials are ever willing to pour big money into it.
The two Ronnies
In the school adjacent to ‘Maria Kade’ they call them the two Ronnies. News has trickled in that the masters-in-charge were interfering in the school’s two major sports – cricket and rugby – and causing a lot of problems for officials, Old Boys and Players. Even people in the white cassock seem to have no control over them. Now they say the two Ronnies are trying to get involved in watersports events of the school as well. Parents, teachers, officials and Old Boys are nonplussed right now. They are now wondering where this comedy will take the school.
Green light at 60
Usually cricket umpires are not allowed to stand at Division One games when they reach the ripe old age of 60. However, there was an exception when one such official was given the ‘green light’ to do this. Pundits of the game say that that he wields a lot of power and has managed to manoeuvre this event too. This, they say, is the first such occasion that such a thing has happened.
