Lanka. In 1924, Mr.P.De.S.Kularathna with some other benefactors took an initiative to establish Sri Sumangala B.M.V. at Rankoth Vihara premises with 25 students. Also there were some other benefactors and dedicated principals who lavishly spent their wealth and energy to start and run the school. Mrs.L.Vincent and Mrs. Maline Ransooriya, as principals who have given marvelous services to the institution. They also tried to inculcate the spiritual habits of the children as a Buddhist school.
During Mrs. Maline Ransooriya’s period, in 1960 the school came under government and Mrs. Ranasooriya was able to steer the institution ahead overcoming many challenges. During this period the school had many patrons. As a result the number of students increased and the school showed its true colours in every sphere both in academic and extracurricular activities. Presently with over 3600 stuents and 145 teachers, Sumangala Balika Maha Vidyalaya has spread out its administrative need for effortless administration. The Principal, Mrs.A.D.S.S.Nepa with the assistance from the Vice-Principals, guided the school to the path of success.

As a 1AB National School, observing the government educational curriculum in Sinhala Medium from Grade 1 to 13 and English medium from 6 to 13 and the special Education Unit functions effectively here.
At present, the school is in an excellent position as the results of Grade 5 Scholarship, G.C.E.(O/L) and G.C.E(A/L) are well ahead. Annually more than 150 students enter national universities and has produced distinguished and renowned personalities to the country and has been honoured as pioneers of various professional fields of expertise.
