Street demonstrations by parents and past pupils of a school in the southern province, has prompted authorities to fill in the eight-month-long vacancy for a principal in the school.

Deva Pathiraja National School, Ratgama, in operation since 1920, and currently having 2,500 students, had been without a principal after the transfer of the previous principal.

More than 500 parents and past pupils took to the streets recently close to the school, blocking traffic on the Colombo-Galle Road at Ratgama for several hours, prompting authorities to give an assurance that the vacancy will be filled soon.

Accordingly, a new principal has been appointed to the school now. Earlier, the matter was brought to the notice of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, when the student’s visited Temple Trees.

Despite filling the vacancy, the school is short of about 15 teachers, and the past pupils and parents have expressed hope that these vacancies too would be filled.
