Strong winds, rain bring down trees, power lines disrupting road traffic, train services
View(s):Strong winds and rain caused damage to more than 1,400 houses in various parts of the country, especially in the coastal areas of the Western and Southern Provinces. The Kalutara and Galle districts were the worst affected with damage also reported in the Matara and Colombo Districts.
In the Kalutara district more than 600 houses were partially damaged while 19 of them were completely destroyed. Kalutara district Government Agent U.D.C. Jayalal told the Sunday Times that 323 houses were damaged in the Beruwala area. Galle district Government Agent Ravindra Hewavitharana said 792 houses in his district were partially damaged while 31 were fully damaged.
In the Matara district 80 houses were partially damaged and 18 fully damaged, Government Agent E A C Widanagamachchi said. However the Disaster Management Centre last night put the number of houses partially damaged at 396 and houses fully damaged at 24.
The roof of three buildings of St Aloysius College, Galle were destroyed while in the Imaduwa area three houses were badly damaged as a result of trees falling on them with several others suffering minor damage.
High winds on the Galle Road and the railway’s Coast Line resulted in trees falling and electricity posts collapsing causing delays to road traffic and trains for several hours. In Colombo too several houses were damaged while large trees had fallen across roads and buildings.
Among the locations where trees had fallen were Maitland Crescent, Viharamahadevi Park, near the Sports Ministry grounds, adjoining Independence Square, Muttiah Road and Dawson Street in Colombo 2 .
