“LC Strides” for new Sports Complex
View(s):CMS Ladies’ College, founded in 1900, has always laid great emphasis on producing well rounded women, excelling in academic and extracurricular activities. The spacious back garden, complete with netball, tennis and basketball courts has enabled Ladies’ College to excel in many sports particularly athletics, rowing, waterpolo, tennis and basketball. It was one of the first girls’ schools to build a swimming pool.
However, the need for more sports facilities, specifically a gym and badminton and squash courts, has been felt increasingly. Principal, Mrs Nirmali Wickremasinghe, launched an ambitious building programme to fulfill this need and the foundation stone for the building was laid by Bishop Dhiloraj Canagasaby on April 27, 2012. The structure of the building housing the Sports Complex is now nearing completion and the second phase of outfitting the building is about to commence.
The Parent Teacher Association of Ladies’ College has risen to the challenge of raising funds for this venture by organising “LC Strides”, a walk and fun fair, which will take to the streets on Saturday, June 29. All proceeds from the purchase of tickets, T-shirts, caps and other memorabilia of the Walk will be channelled to equip the school Sports Complex that will provide students with a fully outfitted gym and space for badminton and squash courts.
The walk will start from the school front gate at 4 p.m. and will proceed around the block ending in the Back Garden, where a Fun Fair will continue the party. A multitude of food outlets will be selling food and beverages and the school clubs and societies will be raising money for their activities by running exciting stalls.
The walk will feature a series of ‘floats’ connected to the various sports available in the school, fancy vehicles together with “old crocks”. A cycle parade will be included.
All present students and most “old girls” will participate in this fun-filled event which will provide old and new LCites an opportunity to meet and greet their old friends and teachers and re-live their school days.
