Mahamaya’s swimmers cruised to 12th consecutive title
View(s):Mahamaya College, Kandy cruised through to victory in the girls’ category of the National Age Group Swimming Relay Championships 2013 for the twelfth consecutive year since 2002, at the Sugathadasa National Sports Complex.
Four new National Age Group records were established by Mahamaya swimmers in the Under 14 and 16 Medley and Freestyle Relays by Vinoli, Nisali, Thilini, Pawani and Shalani of the Under 16 bracket, and Mahesha, Sandeepa, Niresha, Utthama, Nethmi and Devindaya of the Under 14 category.
This is the third victory recorded by Mahamaya swimmers for the 2013 season.
The season started on a winning note for the team when they claimed the two-mile sea swimming championship in the junior and senior competitions, proving that they could not only rule the pool but the sea as well.
They won the pentathlon competition for the sixth consecutive year which was the second victory and winning the relay championship was the third for the season which will give the team high morale boost for the upcoming Sri Lanka Schools Swimming Championship, to be held in mid-June where Mahamaya have dominated, winning consecutively fourteen times.
The 2013 team is captained by experienced swimmer Imani Abayakoon and strengthen by Vinoli Sriwardana, Nisali Dissanayake and Iroshi Mahanthe who have been selected to the national squad. The 2013 squad comprises s over 60 swimmers whose individual contributions have helped to bring honor to the school. The team is coached by U.H.Sugath for the 13th consecutive year.
