Rain hampers first day’s proceedings at Piliyandala
The first day’s proceedings of the 22nd All Island Inter-School Championship was hampered by heavy rain which came pouring down in the evening forcing the organisers Sri Lanka Schools Netball Association to call off some of the first round matches which were due to be played yesterday.
From the matches played in the two groups of Division ‘A’ and ‘B’ category fancied teams advanced to the second round. In the three
age groups of the ‘A’ category some of the top teams including defending champions Holy Family Convent Kurunegala were not seen in action.
The under 18 category saw 29 teams making it to the second round while 31 teams qualified in the under 16 category and 23 teams in the under 14 category.
In the group ‘B’ category defending champions Dehigahalanda MV Ambalantota along with 13 other teams qualified to the second round with 14 teams in the under 16 category too booking a berth to the second round.
The second round matches are scheduled to be played today from 8.00 a.m. onwards with the favourites to win the championship Holy Family Convent Kurunegala due to be in action in the morning and evening sessions in all the three age groups.
Holy Family Convent Kurunegala are the hot favourites to lift the title having won the championship for the last five years. They were first crowned as the netball queens in the year 2008 and since then have been easy winners.
Last year they won the championship in style as they swept the boards in all four age groups of under 12, 14, 16 and 18. This year the championship is not being held in the under 12 category due to the circular sent to the schools by the Minister of Education.
The final of the championship is scheduled to be held from 2.00 p.m. onwards on June 10 (Monday) at the same venue.
