Sri Lanka’s vehicle registrations fell sharply by 27.7 per cent to116, 552 in the 1st five months of 2013, from 161,187 a year earlier, Motor Traffic Department officials said.

According to department data, motor car registrations, plunged to 10,873 in the first four months of 2013, down 37 per cent from17,281 a year earlier.

Three wheelers fell to 36,354 (in the same period in 2013), down 6.32 per cent from 38,810 a year earlier, and motor cycles fell to 78,980, down 17.7 per cent from 95,961.

Registrations of lorries also plunged to 2664 in the first five months of 2013, down 50.3 per cent from 5361 a year earlier.

Registrations of Maruti/Suzuki and Alto cars were down to a drastic level while super luxury BMW 5 series and hybrid cars were up, motor traders said. BMW vehicles sales are believed to be driven by duty slashed vehicle permits given to senior public sector employees.

Motor traders disclosed that there is an increase in hybrid imports to the island due a lower 100 per cent duty compared to 200 -350 per cent duty hike for petrol and diesel cars.
