The Past Pupils’s Association (PPA) of the Colombo Branch of Hillwood College Kandy celebrated its Golden Jubilee recently.
It was inaugurated in 1963, under the patronage of Her Excellency Seela Rambukwella Gopallawa, wife of then Governor General Sir William Gopallawa.

Office bearers of the first committee were: Patron- Mrs Seela Rambukwella Gopallawa, Chairperson- Dulcie Dunuwilla Wijenaike, Secretary- Lois De Silva, Treasurer- Indrani Ratwatte Kehelpannala and Recoding Secretary- Anthea Jonklaas.

The present office bearers are: Chairperson- Sharmini Bandaranayake Wickremasinghe, Vice Chairperson- Veronica Madawala, Secretary- Nelika De Soysa Jayasooriya Rajapakse, Assistant Secretary- Kishali Mendis, Treasurer- Anushani Narangammana and Assistant Treasurer- Thanuja Madawala Gooneratne.

Committee members

The committee comprises of Shanika Talwatte, Dinukshi Tennekoon, Hemanthi Bulathwatte, Sharlene Muthumudalige, Premal Munasinhe, Shrijitha Dissanayaka, Madumali Jayasundara, Dinoo Jayawardena, Shashikala Pieris, Brenda Jacob, Nadeesha Aluwihare, Himeshi Fernando, Lalani Aluwihare, Upamallika Nanayakkara, Loretta Weerasinghe, Udayangani Bulumulla, Asha Perera, Thanuja Gammampila, Vidya de Saram, Sachini Alwis and Janani Rajanayake

Current Chairperson Sharmini Wickramasinghe explained that the Colombo Branch intends to continue their services and work on strengthening their relationship with the parent body in Kandy and the College. They would also join hands with the parent body in Kandy, to support the school in all its development activities.

Plans are under way to organise an event in the coming year, to fund the renovation of the school chapel, she further explained.
During the past eight years, all aspects of the school, including the academic, aesthetic, sports and other extracurricular activities have grown and developed under the leadership of Principal Sudarshini Hettige.

“We have a strong academic and non academic staff at both primary and secondary levels. The teachers at these levels and the academic results which they have help obtain are a pride and joy to us. Not only in academic results, Hillwood has become a leader in the sports arena as well. The great support and dedication of our Vice Principal Nelum De Alwis, all Sectional Heads, all academic and non academic staff are a great encouragement to me and have made Hillwood College a prestigious girls’ school in the country,” Ms Hettige said.

Hillwood College, Kandy, was founded in 1890, and has now become a prestigious girls’ school in the Central hill country, and a leading girls’ college in Sri Lanka. Steeped in rich history and tradition, the school has stood the test of time to complete 123 years of scholastic education to generations of young women in the country. Throughout this period, Hillwood College has produced a number of eminent daughters who have brightened Mother Lanka.
